Betty Bates Brown was born on May 8, 1950, in Carson, MS to Rufus, Sr. and Oddie Skinner Bates.  Betty graduated from Bassfield High School in 1967 and remained in Jefferson Davis County all of her life.  Born the middle child of a large family; she was raised in an era where hard work was no stranger; but love was abundant.  Betty's parents spent long days working in the fields and Betty assisted in the care for her younger siblings, helping with meals, chores and keeping the household running smoothly.  This natural instinct of nurturing defined Betty at a young age and it would be with her throughout her life. Betty was the caregiver for her special needs brother-in-law for over 20 years and although she had no children of her own, she became like a 2nd mother to her nieces and nephews and "Nannie" to her 2 great-nephews and great-niece. An excellent seamstress, Betty made clothes for many in her family and was also a talented quilter and maker of beautiful tapestries. Approximately 10 years ago, Betty began what were some of the most enjoyable years of her life; when she and her sister, that she loved so much, moved in together.  Enjoying the special bond and relationship that only sisters can enjoy, Betty and Patsy were each other's constant companions.  They loved to shop together, watch their favorite shows...especially Gordon Ramsay and fill their days with laughter.

Some of the things that she enjoyed most were her Coca-Cola, Hunt's Brothers Pizza and a good hamburger. In addition, Betty also loved the many rose bushes that adorned her yard. Also, her family remarks that Thanksgiving and Christmas were 2 special holidays shared by Betty's family.  Being a great cook, they were fond of her Deviled Eggs, Potato Salad and Macaroni and Cheese; but Betty's Dressing was probably the best of all.  She was a member of Carson Baptist Church and was loved by all that knew her.

She was welcomed into heaven by her husband, Vinson Brown; parents, Rufus, Sr. and Oddie Bates; her; brothers, Jessie Edward Bates, Rufus Bates, Jr., Tommy Taylor Bates, Mickael Bates, Sr., Billy Bates, Sr., Lefty Percale Bates and his sisters, Martha Elizabeth Allen and Emma Fairchild.

Betty's memory will forever be cherished by her sister, Patsy Cates of Carson; her sisters-in-law, Mary Bates of McHenry, Janice Bates of Carson and also a host of nieces and nephews.

The family of Mrs. Brown wishes to express special thanks to Darlene and Jasmine from Deaconess Hospice of Brookhaven.
