Carrie Viriginia Broom was born on June 13, 1933 in Lawrence County, MS to Clifford and Julia Johnson Jackson. Having spent her earlier years in the Arm Community, she became of resident of Oakvale in the latter part of her life. In addition to tending her flowers, she loved going to gospel singings with friends on the weekends.
One of her great pleasures in life was her outings to Brookhaven with her son to get chicken livers and gizzards. While she enjoyed the food, it was the memories she shared as she pointed out familiar landmarks along the way which meant so much to her. These journeys became a living tapestry of reminiscences, linking the past and present.
Mrs. Broom’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She held a profound reverence for the Word of God, her well-worn Bible a testament to a life deeply anchored in scripture, with passages richly highlighted—an enduring treasure that reflected her devout spirit. She was a devoted member of Society Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Joan Bass (Tommy); son, Howard Broom; sister, Edna Letchworth (Joe); her brothers, Edgar, Bill (Ruth), Enos (Jean), Harold (Geraline), and Shelton (Jean) Jackson; her great-great grandson, Jackson Kramer; son-in-law, Mike Dyess; and her grandson-in-law, Randy Davis.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Vera Dyess of Oakvale; her son, Jerry Broom (Diana) of Columbia; and her daughter-in-law, Novelyn Broom of Columbia. Maw-maw and Me-me Broom to some, and Nana to others, her legacy will live on through her grandchildren, Janice Prine, Crystal Broom, Josh Broom, Kyle Broom, Tosha Head (Jeff), Michael Broom (Jamie), April Broom, Christopher Broom, Connor Broom, Jeffrey Pierce, Sara Giardina (Karl), Carrie Davis, Michael Goddard (Ashley), Timothy Dyess; 25 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild.
