DeLeon Lott was born on July 22, 1941, in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi, to Clarence and Gladys Williamson Lott. Affectionately known as “D” or simply “Leon,” he earned yet another nickname, “Captain D,” from his many friends at the Grove Nursing Home in Columbia, where he had made his home for the past several years. But regardless of what name he answered to, one thing was certain: DeLeon could always be counted on when someone needed him.
DeLeon was educated in Jefferson Davis County before moving to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he worked at a galvanizing plant. Afterward, he would return to his roots in Jefferson Davis County, where he established himself as a skilled carpenter and painter. Known for his excellent craftsmanship, he was especially gifted in cabinetmaking, and his work was highly sought after throughout the community until declining health forced him to lay down his tools.
Along with his love for carpentry, DeLeon had another passion—farming. He loved working the soil and watching things grow. A large garden was always a part of his life, and he took great pleasure in sharing the fruits of his labor. After making sure his family had plenty, he generously shared his harvest with friends and neighbors. That was simply DeLeon's way. He had a giving heart, and his generosity knew no bounds.
Above all, DeLeon loved his family. He was their solid rock, a steady and dependable presence who could always be counted on. Through the years, he remained faithful to those he loved, offering a helping hand whenever it was needed. He will be remembered for his hardworking hands, his generous spirit, and the quiet, steadfast love he had for his family.
DeLeon was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Gladys Lott; his sister, Marie Williams; an infant sister; and his brothers, Reggie, Ray, Gerald, and Roy Lott.
His memory will forever be cherished by his loving sister, June McNease, and her husband, Bill; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
