Grace M. Grubbs

March 15, 1925 — January 23, 2019

Grace Mullins Grubbs, 93, of Prentiss, went on to be with her Lord on January 23, 2019, surrounded by her family as they sang her favorite hymns. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Grubbs of 57 years and is survived by her four children Demery (Sue) Grubbs, Linda (John) Shivers, Gary (Glenda) Grubbs and Gloria (Patrick) Graham, and five grandchildren, Todd Shivers, Ginger Grubbs Powell, Molly Grubbs Moran, Logan Grubbs, Maria Kawas, and Luke Jimenez and five great grandchildren.   Grace graduated from Pinola High School where she was an all-state basketball player and the lead in her school play Cyclone Sally. She attended Draughn’s Business School and started her professional career with First National Bank of Jackson.  After the war she married Earl Grubbs and they moved to Prentiss where she continued her 25 year banking career at the Bank of Blountville and the Bank of Prentiss. In 1975 she was elected Tax Assessor/Collector for Jefferson Davis County and served for 20 years. Grace also served as President of the Miss Tax Assessor Association in 1984.  Grace Grubbs was very civic minded and was deeply devoted to her town and county.  In remembrance of her life and service the Mayor of Prentiss ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff. She was a charter member of the 20th Century Club, and was selected twice as the Woman of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.  The Ereka Art Federated Club recognized Grace Grubbs with the “Legacy of Women’s Leadership Award” in 2013.  At age 90, she was honored by the University of Southern Mississippi as an avid fan and a 40 year Golden Eagle season ticket holder. She was completely devoted to service through Prentiss Baptist Church.  She was a trustee, chairperson of numerous committees, active in the Women’s Missionary Union, but her favorite ministry was gathering children around her at the front of the church for their own special message. For those who loved Grace, they knew she was the manifestation of her name. Her love for God and for her fellow man was revealed in unending acts of kindness and grace.  Her heart and her door were always open to those who needed love and forgiveness.  She assured them that she was not perfect, but by the grace of God she was forgiven and they could be too, just by calling on his name.  Grace will be remembered most clearly and missed most dearly, as a loyal and true friend.  She was a devout woman of strong faith, who understood how richly she had been blessed. Grace was a woman of wit and intelligence, energy and determination, bound together by her faith, her beauty, common sense, and ever-present elegance and grace.    Her children were blessed to have a mother who was involved in their lives in every way, whether a football or basketball game, a cheerleader camp, or being at church. The Grubbs home was a hub of activity as she welcomed, loved and fed one and all. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved being with their Nanny.  They loved taking walks in the woods with her, hearing stories of her childhood, but their favorite time was when Nanny told them scary ghost stories.  This tradition is being passed on today as her great grandchildren gather their friends around and tell the same stories.  Grace was born in Simpson County, to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Mullins, and was preceded in death by her brother C.D. Mullins and sister Irene Basham, and she is survived by a sister Winnie Rodick of Mendenhall.   Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday, January 28, 2019 at Saulters-Moore Funeral Home in Prentiss. The Funeral Service will be Monday at 10 AM at Prentiss Baptist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Prentiss Baptist Church or Homes Of Hope For Children in Purvis.
