Gregory Alan Thompson was born on December 15, 1956 in Prentiss, Mississippi to Jimmy and Hilda Kirby Thompson. Raised mainly in New Orleans, the family also had a dual residence in Bassfield.
Greg was a master brick mason whose expert craft left an indelible mark across the South, especially along the Mississippi and Louisiana Gulf Coast, and throughout the historic New Orleans French Quarter. His career was defined by an extraordinary dedication to the artistry of masonry staining, with a particular emphasis on restoration work. Greg’s skill in replicating the colors of antique brick and mortar—now often unavailable—elevated his work beyond mere construction into a fine art form which was highly sought after. His meticulous approach and deep respect for historical authenticity helped preserve the character and beauty of some of the region’s most treasured buildings, including restaurants, hotels, and churches. The intricacy of his work in the French Quarter was especially notable, given the unique restrictions on materials required to maintain the authenticity of these antique structures.
Throughout his life, Greg was known not only for his mastery in masonry but also for the joy he found in sharing time with family and friends. Among his favorite pastimes was shooting pool, a game at which he was both highly skilled and fiercely competitive. Beyond playing, Greg took pleasure in the detailed work of restoring pool cues, an art that involved careful attention to both linen and leather wraps. This passion reflected his broader commitment to craftsmanship and precision in all areas of his life.
Greg's legacy is one of dedicated artistry, steadfast commitment to his craft, and genuine affection for those around him. His work continues to stand as a testament to his talent and care, while his memories endure with those fortunate enough to have known him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Hilda Thompson, and his brother, David Thompson.
His memory will forever by cherished by his wife of 30 years, Ann Thompson of Bassfield; sons, Dominic Thompson of Pierre Part, LA, Joseph Thompson of Hammond, LA, David Thompson of Sumrall; step-son, John Harris of Gonzales, LA; sister, Belinda Kerley of Meridian; brother, Ronnie Thompson of Sacramento, CA; and a host of grandchildren.
