Lawana was born on October 6, 1939, in Jefferson Davis County to McKinley and Reidie Mae McPhail Smith. The oldest of nine children, she embodied the spirit of a matriarch. From a young age, she took on the responsibilities of helping to rear her siblings, managing the household, and cooking, shaping her into the nurturing and loving figure she would become. Her passion for gardening and her talent for tending her flowers reflected her nurturing nature, creating beautiful spaces that radiated her warmth and care.
She married the love of her life, Carl “Bouy” Haddox and enjoyed 61 wonderful years with him. The couple went on to settle in Rankin County, where they raised their daughter in a home filled with love. Lawana enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a bookkeeper for Dean & Dean Architects in Jackson, Mississippi.
As a faithful member of Old Greens Creek Baptist Church, Lawana was devoted to her family's heritage there, served as pianist, and also enjoyed singing there for many years.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Eugene “Bouy” Haddox, Jr., and her siblings, Sue Smith and Dan Smith.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Dena Haddox Henry (Chris) of Florence; her sisters, Shirley Dyess, Sandra Ann Cherem, Rachel Stephens; and her brothers, Travis Smith, Lucky Smith, and Troy Smith. The legacy of their GG will also live on through her granddaughters, Victoria Brent (Justin) and Kerin Smith (Justin), both of Florence; and her great-grandchildren, Braydon Kelly, Joel Kelly, Maci Smith, Makenzi Smith, Waverly Brent, and Mylee Cate Smith.
The family also wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Debra Sasser for the devotion and care given to Mrs. Haddox during her convalescence.
