Norma Jean Herrin Coulter was born on September 8, 1934, in Sumrall, Mississippi, to William Bennett and Elois Pace Herrin. Raised in Prentiss, Norma had a vibrant spirit that shone throughout her high school years, where she showcased her talent as a majorette and also a drummer in the school band.
Norma would go on to marry Shelby Marvin Coulter, Jr., the love of her life, and together they embraced the adventure of marriage. Early in their love story, Shelby's service in the U.S. military sent them to Germany for two years, a period Norma cherished—creating memories that would last a lifetime.
In addition to her role as a devoted wife, Norma made significant contributions to her community through her career. She served as an office manager for Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance for nearly two decades. With Shelby, she also co-owned and operated Coulter's Cleaners in Prentiss and Hattiesburg, a business that notably held the contract to clean the uniforms at Camp Shelby for several years. Her dedication to her work and her entrepreneurial spirit were evident to all who interacted with her.
Norma's deep connection with her family was particularly evident in her close relationship with her sisters, Willene and Sue. The three sisters shared many adventures, traveling together to visit relatives in Alabama and Tennessee, creating lasting joy and memories.
Active in her community, Norma was a proud member of the Garden Club in Hattiesburg and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Coulter is preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Coulter; daughter, Ginger Coulter; sister, Willene Stephens; nephew, Bennett McArthur; and her brother-in-law, Marc McArthur.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Janet C. Thompson (Jody); sister, Sue McArthur; her sister-in-law, Mary Parker Wilson, and her brother-in-law, Mack Stephens. The legacy of their Nonna will also live on through her grandchildren, Jayme Anderson (Aaron), Jay Thompson, Jinger Thompson Cole (Robert), Jill Thompson (Nathan), and her great-grandchildren, Carter, Zoey, Remington, Kason, William, Isabella, and Bennett.
