Richard Frank Hathorn was born on October 27, 1964, in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi, to Willie and Lucy Hanegan Hathorn. Affectionately known as “Richard Frank” to the many family members and friends who knew and loved him, he was a man of many talents, a strong work ethic, and a generous heart.
A graduate of Bassfield High School, Richard Frank continued his education at Pearl River Junior College. A naturally gifted athlete, he distinguished himself both in high school and college, excelling in just about every sport he played. From football and baseball to softball and track, his athletic abilities were well known throughout the community. Among his fondest memories were the days spent playing softball for the “Knuckle Busters,” a team coached by his brother, Wayne. Those games brought plenty of friendly competition, laughter, and memories that would be treasured for years to come.
Richard Frank began his working career as an electrician with Georgia-Pacific before his ambition and independent spirit led him to establish his own business, Hathorn Electric. His knowledge, skill, and dedication to his work earned him the respect of many throughout the area. For nearly 20 years, he also faithfully served with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, most recently as manager of Jefferson Davis Lake.
Away from his work, Richard Frank found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed tending his garden, keeping his yard looking its best, and spending a peaceful day fishing. He also had a special place in his heart for his dogs, whose companionship brought him much enjoyment. Richard Frank also loved supporting Jaguar football. On Friday nights, he could often be found working behind the concession stand, faithfully flipping hamburgers for hungry fans. It was just one of the many ways he quietly gave of his time and talents to the community he loved.
Above all, Richard Frank treasured his family. While each member of his family held a special place in his heart, it was his grandchildren who occupied its most tender corner. They were a particular source of pride and joy, and nothing brought him greater happiness than the love he shared with them.
A devoted parishioner of St. Peter Catholic Church, Richard Frank was faithful to his church family and always willing to lend a helping hand wherever there was a need.
Richard Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lucy Hathorn; his beloved wife, Angie; and his siblings, Wayne Hathorn, Kenneth Ray Hathorn, and Judy Carr.
His memory will forever be cherished by his daughters, Hartley Hathorn (Will) of Bassfield, Hannah Hathorn of Carson; his son, Richard Hunter Hathorn of Bassfield; his sisters, Glenda McRaney, Beverly Jackson, Marth Daley, all of Bassfield; Susan Hathorn of Hattiesburg, Denise Dyess of Sumrall, Clarissa Ann Hathorn of Ellisville; and his brothers, Jeff Hathorn of Bassfield, and Billy Hathorn of Petal. The legacy of their Pawpaw will also live on through his grandchildren, Brayden, Kalen, Camille, and Evie.
