Funeral services for Dr. Robert Larry Rogers will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Saulters Moore Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Tom Jackson officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Old Silver Creek Cemetery. Dr. Rogers, age 84, entered into the eternal rest of his Lord on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Forrest General Hospital. Saulters Moore Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Saulters Moore Funeral Home. Friends may also call on Saturday, beginning at 2:00 pm and continuing until the hour of service at 3:00 pm.
Larry was born on February 10, 1942, in Silver Creek, Mississippi to Robert Glyn and Mary Nell Hartzog Rogers. He attended Hinds Junior College and Mississippi State University, where he received a B.S. degree in plant pathology and weed science in 1964. In 1967, he received a Ph.D. in plant pathology and weed science from Auburn University, with a minor in biochemistry.
In 1967, he joined the faculty of LSU’s Department of Plant Pathology as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 1972 and professor in 1976. One research focus was soybean weed control. He served as major professor for seven M.S. students and two Ph.D. students and on committees for 19 other graduate students.
In 1974, he was appointed resident director of the Northeast Research Station in St. Joseph. This station, including its Macon Ridge Branch in Winnsboro, serves an 11-parish area that compasses the most intensive now crop production in Louisiana. Under his leadership, the number of senior research faculty went from four to eight. Research projects were expanded to include most aspects of row crop production and forages.
From 1988 until 1991, Dr. Rogers’ duties were expanded to include the Sweet Potato Research Station at Chase.
In 1995, he moved to Baton Rouge to become the LSU AgCenter’s vice chancellor for administration. In 1996, he was named vice chancellor for research and director of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station.
Throughout his career, Dr. Rogers authored or co-authored 10 papers in national scientific journals, six LAES bulletins, more than 50 abstracts, and more than 100 popular magazine and newspaper articles.
A member of the Southern Weed Science Society since 1965, he served as president in 1987. Dr. Rogers attended Bethany Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer June Rogers, and his brother, Thomas Houston “Tommy” Rogers.
His memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife, Marsha Rowland Rogers of Prentiss; his son, Matt Rogers (Ginger) of Baton Rouge; brother, Mike Rogers of Prentiss; sister, Susan Peoples (Jim) of Madison, and his grandson, William Andrew Rogers of Baton Rouge.
