Rodney was born of August 11, 1949, in Poplarville, MS to Cecil and Bernice Youngblood Slade. Having grown up in Purvis, he was also a graduate of Purvis High School. Afterward, Rodney relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, where he enrolled in Electronics School. His commitment to learning paved the way for a diverse career spanning several sectors, including pipefitting and electrical work, as well as the oil refinery industry. However, it was his passion for the meticulous artistry of leatherworking, and restoration of firearms and stringed instruments that truly defined his legacy.
Rodney's talent in restoration was unmatched; he possessed an innate ability to breathe new life into items without compromising their original integrity. Many fulfilling hours were spent at his happy place, known as "The Outfitter Shop", practicing his craft. This dedication to preserving history and craftsmanship earned him a well-deserved reputation for excellence and perfection. Those who experienced his handiwork often referred to it as “Sladerized,” symbolizing the unique touch that only he could provide.
Throughout his life, Rodney's influence extended beyond his professional pursuits, touching the lives of all who knew him. His commitment to quality and craftsmanship resonated with many, establishing a lasting impact in both his personal and professional circles.
Rodney Slade will be remembered not only for his technical skill and creativity but also for the warmth and generosity he shared with those around him. His legacy will live on in the memories and stories of those who were fortunate enough to know him and experience the beauty of his restorations.
Rodney is preceded in death by his father, Cecil Slade; his mother and step-father, Lloyd and Bernice McNeil, and his brother, Reggie Slade.
His memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife of 55 years, Michele Deaver Slade of Purvis; his daughter, Amanda Lebow (Sean) of Orlando, FL; his son, Jayson Slade (Jennifer) of Gulfport; and his sister, Frieda Slade of Purvis. The legacy of their "Bippy" will also live on through his grandchildren, Hannah Slade, NoraCate Slade, Mia Claire Lebow, and Luke Lebow.
