Walter G. Wilson was born on November 11, 1933, in Lawrence County, Mississippi, to Walker and Nellie Mae Rawls Wilson. A graduate of Monticello High School, he was a member of the Red Devils football team as well as the school band. Afterward, he proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force.
“Jerry”, as he was known by the many family and friends that loved him, was a partner with his father and brothers in the Wilson and Son Equipment Company in Prentiss, which was the John Deere dealership from 1960 until 1992. Family life for Jerry was intertwined with his career. His wife recalls that while she worked at a dental clinic, their sons would be found working alongside him at the dealership. At the same time, their daughter helped prepare supper back home, exemplifying the spirit of togetherness that was central to their family. The dealership was more than just a business; it was a family affair that shaped the lives of those involved.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jerry had various other pastimes. He enjoyed working with his cows and horses, sharing these experiences with those he loved. His sons fondly remember how glad they were when a round hay baler was acquired, bringing an end to the strenuous task of loading square bales of hay—a change that brought some relief to many long days spent laboring in the field.
Jerry was also enjoying hunting and fishing when time permitted. In addition, his community involvement extended beyond his business and family life. Jerry took pride in mentoring his sons and other young men in Prentiss, reflecting his commitment to helping others grow and succeed. His active role with the Boy Scouts further highlighted his dedication to nurturing the next generation. As a member of the Prentiss Baptist Church, a Mason, and a Shriner, he contributed to the vibrancy of the town of Prentiss. He also served with the Prentiss Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Wilson is preceded in death by his parents, Walker and Nellie Mae Wilson.
His memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife of 67 years, Janelle Wilson of Prentiss; his daughter, Marty Harvey (Sonny) of Silver Creek; his sons, Greg Wilson (Kim) of Lumberton, Chris Wilson of Silver Creek, and his brother, James A. Wilson of Monticello. The legacy of their Poppy will also live on through his grandchildren, Trey Harvey, Will Harvey, Zachary Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wilson, Connor Wilson, Olivia Jones, and 6 great-grandchildren.
