William Roy "Billy" McMurry was born on April 15, 1965, in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi, to Jesse McMurry and Priscilla Ann Barnes McMurry. A graduate of Bassfield High School, Billy, as he was known to his many friends and family, had been a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), reflecting his appreciation for agriculture and his rural upbringing. After high school, he attended Pearl River Junior College before earning a bachelor's degree in History from William Carey College. After receiving his degree, Billy spent many rewarding years sharing his knowledge of history as he taught students at both Prentiss and Mt. Olive Schools.
Billy possessed a lifelong love of history, genealogy, and ancestry. He found great joy in researching family histories and preserving the stories of those who came before him. He also enjoyed spending time on the golf course, listening to music—especially the Doobie Brothers—and playing his guitar. Mr. McMurry was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Roy and Lois McMurry; his maternal grandparents, Hatton and Alene Barnes; and his father, Jesse McMurry.
Billy's memory will forever be cherished by his mother, Ann Barnes McMurry; his brother, Mark McMurry, both of Bassfield; his aunts, Debbie Barnes Robbins (Sammy G.) of Foxworth, Rachel Barnes Simon of Palm City, FL; his niece, Lisa McMurry Lee of Bassfield; and his nephews, Austin McMurry of Monticello, and Hunter McMurry of Bassfield.
